Jelly Belly gets boozy

Sunday, July 31st, 2005

Jelly Belly (maker of gourmet jelly beans) now has a wine bar, created in conjunction with Wine X Magazine. The bar creates wine tastes by combining existing Jelly Belly flavors. For example, to make De Loach Chardonnay, one would combine the following flavors: Green Apple, Lemon Drop, Juicy Pear, Crushed Pineapple, Peach, French Vanilla and […]

burning ring of fire

Thursday, July 28th, 2005

The trailer for Walk the Line has hit the internet. Although the release date for the film about my favorite man in black isn’t until November, I’m already getting my panties in a twist.
If prior works in the same vein (like Ray or Great Balls of Fire) are any indication, the movie will probably be […]

in the name of love

I can’t decide which is lamer: U2’s recent work, or the iPod U2 Special Edition.
The fact that Apple thought cross-marketing with U2 would be an effective strategy says a lot to me about who the company thinks their consumers are and should be. The original marketing for the iPod was hip and sexy in the […]

good vibrations

Wednesday, July 27th, 2005

Gillette has entered into the “products for her which vibrate unnecessarily, or perhaps, suggestively” market with the Venus Vibrance, a pink plastic razor that emits “Soothing Vibrations.” Apparently, these “Soothing Vibrations” instantly reveal “more radiant skin.”
Radiant skin sounds like what some of us might call “a glow.”
Unfortunately, the presence of razors may keep […]

Pop Rocks and Coke

Monday, July 25th, 2005

My favorite technologically-advanced confection, Pop Rocks is actually patented. This means that no one else can rip off their sugary, crackling goodness. It also means you can read all about how they’re made.
Be warned, though: Pop Rocks does have a competitor in CO2 Carbonated Hard Candy. CO2 provides less of a “pop” and more of […]

Dove discovers: women not thin

Thursday, July 21st, 2005

Dove has launched a new ad campaign featuring six “real” women.* These women are all beautiful in very accessible, average ways, and they have great bodies in very accessible, average ways. The U.S. campaign follows on the heels of a successful ad series in the U.K. that followed the same formula.
The whole concept isn’t […]

Colin Farrell to defend own honor

Tuesday, July 19th, 2005

Just in from the Department of the Obvious: Colin Farrell is a total slut.
Farrell is currently embroiled in a lawsuit against a 31-year-old woman he has accused of trying to distribute a tape of the two knocking boots. The actor claims the pair made the tape under the agreement that it would never be distributed […]

candy doesn’t have to have a point

Saturday, July 16th, 2005

Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is spot-on brilliant. Maybe it was the Fizzy Lifting Drink or the bottle of Shiner, or the massive slice of fudgy chocolate cake or the free Wonka Bar going to my head, but I thought the movie was truly, madly, deeply inspired.
Burton has managed to capture the […]

robots in disguise

Thursday, July 14th, 2005

Apparently, all systems are go for Transformers to become a major motion picture. I’m sure the studio is looking to cash in on the shitstorm of nostalgia floating around right now. Carebears and My Little Ponies* are popping up all over the retail landscape.
Dreamworks head of distribution Jim Tharp had this to say on […]

ain’t no black

Wednesday, July 13th, 2005

Apparently, Nigel Turner is advocating a re-design of the Union Jack, adding black to reflect Britain’s multicultural population. I have difficulty taking Turner’s suggestion seriously, because his name is Nigel and because the new design is being called the “Union Black.”
In other news, Sim Dumenco wrote this funny-as-hell media pop quiz. Definitely worth reading.
