the name means shark

Really, the name has zilch to do with sharks, but I picked up the current issue last night and Esopus Magazine owns.

Esopus Magazine

Published by the Esopus Foundation, Esopus Magazine is a fine arts magazine filled with artworks ranging from pull-out poster projects to stories and personal essays to commissioned recordings. The current issue has music from people including Kate Pierson & Pat Irwin, Avey Tare and Kimya Dawson. All the songs are based on letters from readers describing their imaginary friends.

Perhaps best of all, the publication is subsidized, so the whole thing is only $10 an issue, which is peanuts compared to the cost of similar magazines. In Austin, it’s only available at the Barnes and Noble in the Arboretum.

Oh, and if you wanted to know what the name means for real:

“The Esopus Foundation takes its name and example from the Esopus Creek, located in New York’s Catskill Mountains. It begins as a small stream and meanders … until it empties into the Hudson River. In the 19th century it was a powerful force that carved canyons along its course, but in the 1930s its current was intersected by the construction of the Ashokan Reservoir, which stores much of New York City’s water supply. The part of the stream that runs below this filtering system is often brackish and slow-moving; but above the reservoir, the Esopus is still vibrant: a pure, dynamic space in which diverse elements flow and meld together.”
