and Tigger, too

winnie the pooh

Disney is bastardizing updating A.A. Milne’s classic character Winnie the Pooh by giving him a female sidekick. The new character, described as a 6-year-old tomboy, will replace Christopher Robin in a new animated series.

I have never been a huge fan of Disney’s representation of the characters in the first place. The bright colors seem harsh compared to the sweet, simple drawings that illustrated the original stories.

Honestly, though, I have a hard time understanding why this latest announcement is sparking much interest — throughout the history of the company, Disney has proven its desire to tweak traditional narratives to serve specific agendas. The happily-ever-after version of The Little Mermaid springs to mind, as do countless other Disney-produced animated features.

Neo-Pooh is slated to hit the television in 2007. Read the dirty details right here.

I liked: “but the feeling was these timeless characters really needed a breath of fresh air”.

the over-sized pooh bear on my bed is glaring at me with a decidedly unhappy look.
