burning ring of fire

The trailer for Walk the Line has hit the internet. Although the release date for the film about my favorite man in black isn’t until November, I’m already getting my panties in a twist.

If prior works in the same vein (like Ray or Great Balls of Fire) are any indication, the movie will probably be mediocre at best, saccharine redemptive TV-style biopic at worst. Part of the problem with these types of biographical works is that the medium demands some sort of narrative structure, and in general, people’s lives are too long to have a singular climax or defining moment. I mean, if that were the case, the most important thing that happened to Ray Charles was that he just said no! to heroin, and the biggest thing Jerry Lee Lewis ever did was take his child-cousin-bride to the U.K. with him.
