The Informers about to hit screens

The above trailer is for the latest cinematic adaptation of a Bret Easton Ellis book, the Informers. As an undergraduate, I did some fairly significant research on Bret Easton Ellis’s work, and believed at one point that his work was the sort of thing I would study in graduate school. Through a chain of events I have a hard time reconstructing, I now work on classic video gaming, which is perhaps to suggest that what I’m really interested in is 1980s popular culture.

In any case, I know more about Ellis’s work than is probably normal, and when I heard about the film, I was both intrigued and unpersuaded. The book is a set of linked stories involving a bunch of horrible people and some vampires. Most of the adaptations of Ellis’s work have been substandard, with the exception of The Rules of Attraction,* which is a flawed film that basically got it right. But, the trailer above seems to indicate a compelling film with some truly inspired casting. The whole thing looks glossy and sinister, which is, in my opinion, exactly as it should be. Now, here’s to hoping the vampires are awesome.

*I believe the movie tanked in part because of the terrible advertising, which framed the project as some sort of wacky teen romp for the holidays. Neither the novel nor the film is any such thing, and the promotional efforts effectively turned off the audience who would have actually enjoyed the movie while drawing a crowd that wasn’t particularly inclined to get it.
