I am very much aware of my own double self. The well-known one is very under control; everything is planned and very secure. The unknown one can be very unpleasant. I think this side is responsible for all the creative work - he is in touch with the child. He is not rational, he is impulsive and extremely emotional.
Ingmar Bergman died at the ripe age of 89. I hate to say it, but I’ve sort of assumed he was dead for a long time. There’s a level of celebrity people reach where I find the thought of them as people utterly surreal. Bergman’s not just a celebrity, he’s beyond celebrity, he’s passed into the canon, and once you’re in the canon, you’re just supposed to be dead and anthologized. Being canonized is practically like being embalmed.
