Johnny Are You Queer?

You may be getting the impression that all I do with my free time is surf YouTube looking for videos. That would not be entirely incorrect, though I also, you know, download music and watch actual videos on my actual DVD player. Anyhow, the above is a well-executed bit of slash video featuring Jonathan Rhys Meyers. The track is an exception bit of neo-girl pop by Josie Cotton, who I first found via John Waters’s A Date With John Waters. The song is from a moment in the ’80s just prior to the radical reclamation of the term “queer,” so it was a bit edgy for its time.

The video works pretty well, taking footage from some overtly queer films (like Velvet Goldmine) and mixing it with clips from less comfortably queer movies. In doing so, the montage exposes the homoerotics of the latter, and, coupled with the Cotton track, the whole thing winds up straddling the line between camp and parody.
