Baby Got … Parasol
In honor of the fact that I’ve had “Baby Got Back” stuck in my head since last Friday, the above is some footage of a 1980 production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance featuring a hilarious Victorian-style rendering of Sir Mix-A-Lot’s famous single [via BoingBoing]. Note that young Kevin Kline is playing the pirate king.
The video, which is the work of Chicago artist/songwriter Mike Hightower, is probably one of the best contributions I’ve seen to the “Look! Stuffy white people singing hiphop!” genre of mashup. Though, I think that “Baby Got Back” is pretty delightful regardless of rendition. The hive mind that is Wikipedia has a fairly comprehensive listing of covers and parodies.
