Sleeping With Prince Valium

jonathan adler pop

Jonathan Adler’s “Pop” line is a charming set of uh … let’s call them candy jars, shall we? I’m not sure when I first became aware of Mr. Adler, but I know I fell in love with him around the time this line came out. Now, this may or may not be a direct result of having read Valley of the Dolls at a rather impressionable age, but I think the humor here is dead on. Similarly amusing are a number of pieces in the Utopia collection (among those a condom caddy, a medicine chest, and a mary jane jar).

Apparently, when in high school, the young ceramicist found it hilarious to make his own bongs out of pottery, and for a time, he had a few high end designs available, but he’s since grown up a bit and no longer sells any particularly functional drug paraphernalia.

From Ask Jonathan:

Josef: Where oh, where can I buy the bong you designed awhile back? I’m been combing the internet in a pot induced state for months. Please help.

Jonathan: Oh, the bong. One of the benefits of being a teenage potter was that I could make my own bongs and I got very creative and made lots of them.

My pot-smoking days are long behind me and I’m much more likely to be found cradling a cup of herbal tea than a bong. But, I think bongs are an interesting design challenge and can be quite beautiful. So, I designed a bong that I was quite proud of and sold it for a couple of years as a cheeky nod to my misspent youth. Then, I realized that selling bongs is probably not a good idea. So, I stopped. Sorry :(

I guess we can’t all stay young forever.
