grinderman

I’ve been listening to the Grinderman album a lot, and I have to say, it sounds more or less exactly how I would anticipate an album by a band involving Nick Cave and Warren Ellis to sound. If you like Nick Cave and/or Warren Ellis, you will likely enjoy listening to Grinderman. (And, actually, if you’re indifferent, at least check out “No Pussy Blues,” because it’s a riot.)

It actually reminds me a great deal of the Nick Cave novel, And the Ass Saw the Angel, which is currently in print. And, worth tracking down if you have a strong appreciation for Nick Cave and derive pleasure from reading.

Both Nick Cave and Warren Ellis fall into a camp of people who have a particularly cohesive aesthetic. They’re auteurs, even if they aren’t working in film. Everything that, for example, Nick Cave or Warren Ellis or John Waters or Miranda July does feels like something that person would do. Having a cohesive aesthetic will make someone’s body of work hang together even when it involves things that differ radically in medium. It also, I suspect, makes it very easy to buy these people presents. I bet Nick Cave’s friends have a very clear idea about what Nick Cave likes.
