lovely lady lumps

While I find this hilarious, it reminds me quite a bit of the Tori Amos concept album Strange Little Girls — an album that consisted of covers of (mostly) male artists’ songs about women. The title track, which is of course, a cover of the Stranglers song, is below:

Both projects — Alanis Morisette’s cover of the Black Eyed Peas song, and Amos’s entire album — point to how totally bizarre cover songs can be. Now, I love a good cover. I even love a bad cover. But, the reason that I love them is that they so frequently point to just how strange pop music is. “My Humps” sounds insane slowed down a few notches and stripped of its bells and whistles. Also, sometimes, cover versions salvage songs that are otherwise flat irritating. Amos’s cover of “I Don’t Like Mondays” is so haunting that it redeems the song — long done a disservice by the Boomtown Rats over-the-top production.
