Paging Andy Warhol

So, a group of artists have decided that the thing to do is to launch a giant geostationary banana over the state of Texas. The project is called, that’s right, “Geostationary Banana Over Texas.” The illustration on the website is utterly fantastic, and more or less what I imagine this would look like in various parts of the state.*

I’m not sure of any practical reasons why anyone would want a geostationary banana floating about, but that’s what makes it art. Estimated cost for this effort is around $1 million, which is pretty stiff, but, given that tens of thousands are regularly invested in public artworks that almost no one sees, a slick million for something that will be visible to virtually everyone in Texas and the surrounding areas seems damn near reasonable.

They’re looking for all sorts of non-financial help from engineers, mathematicians, physicists, and folks with fundraising and publicity experience, so if you’re so inclined, mosey on over.

*I will note, however, that the photo gallery is a bit overboard. Apparently, no women, minorities or urbanites will see the giant banana, only men in cowboy hats living in rural areas.
