Apparently, Hormel, the maker of Spam, is struggling with brand image issues, which have caused some of their more upscale products to tank.
“I can’t imagine them selling anything other than Spam,” says Jeff Lieberman, a 28-year-old documentary filmmaker, who regularly shops at stores specializing in natural foods. “Just the name elicits that image of the blue label on the square tin with that loaf of horrendous-looking meat.”
I like that Lieberman, quoted in this article, seems willing to call Spam “meat,” but unwilling to recognize Hormel’s potential to produce natural foods. The methods the company is using are actually somewhat innovative, and, the “natural” labeling is for real — we’re talking mass-produced, preservative-free lunch meat available at places like Wal-Mart.
Trivia for the day: Spam is baked in a seven-story oven. That’s one big oven.
