gay New York

The New York Times committed an act of regressive quasi-journalism this weekend, publishing “Gay or Straight? Hard to Tell,” an article discussing how “gay” and “straight” fashions for men have converged. One of the article highlights is this bit:
“As gay men grow more comfortable shrugging off gay-identified clothing and Schwarzeneggerian fitness standards, straight men are more at ease flaunting a degree of muscle tone seldom seen outside of a Men’s Health cover shoot.”
I somehow doubt that gay men are becoming more comfortable appearing straight as gay lifestyles are becoming more acceptable — I’d guess the more likely explanation is that more gay men are comfortable outing themselves in this current environment, meaning that men who could pass as straight are choosing not to.
I really appreciate that the venerable Times included a handy chart of “Gay, Straight or in Between?” that categorizes things including dogs, Coke products, jeans and female vocalists as “Straight,” “Gay Vague” and “Gay.”
Karen O is “Gay Vague?” Who knew?
