Carly A. KocurekHello, there. I'm Carly. I am a doctoral candidate in American Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. My research focuses on digital media, youth culture, and gender. Right now, I am completing my dissertation, which is a cultural history of the video game arcade in the 1970s and 1980s. I've also done quite a bit of work on digital culture more generally and have spoken on the topic at a number of academic conferences and at SXSW Interactive. My blog, Casual Scholarship, informally covers my thoughts on (mostly) casual gaming. In addition to my more conventional academic work, I have contributed to publications including Nerve, Austinist, Rare, Soundcheck Magazine and Common Sense Media. You can take a gander at some of my oral history and photography work at the Southern Foodways Association's Southern BBQ Trail. As a result of my involvement in that project, I had the great fortune to collaborate on The Republic Of Barbecue: Stories Beyond the Brisket (now available from University of Texas Press). And, at present, I've turned my food studies toward the fine art of cocktailing; follow along with my self-education over at My Life in Cocktails. For more information, please feel free to read my C.V. or contact me via any of the links below.
